Its 2:30am and your woken up as the captain announces your decent, you have been travelling for over 15 hours – from waking up at 4am, getting a taxi to the airport in peak hour traffic to then waiting to board your plane and enduring on a 10 hour flight, the least to say is you are exhausted! Better yet you now have a 7-hour stopover before you board your next flight to your final destination.
Oh the joys of travelling! It’s funny how some of us LOVE airports, airplanes and overall just generally travelling between destinations, and others couldn’t think of anything worse! I was once one of those people that like many of us did not enjoy airplanes, airports and especially long stopovers. But after travelling around the world and enduring in some of the most sleepless nights possible, I have come up with some simple travel tips to help cure your travel hangover and turn that mind into enjoying the travelling in-between your destinations!
The first rule of enjoying a long hale stopover is to set your mind up in a positive way – I’m not saying you have to convince yourself you are going to have an amazing time, its going to be long, tiring and not so fun at times. But at least we can make it comfortable and help you see the positive side. Not only are you embarking to a destination you have either never been to before, or been to many times and love, but you are also being giving the opportunity to visit, see and experience new cultures, cities and countries along the way!
Chances are if you are flying international you will be stopping over in another country along the way! If your flying domestically, you may be visiting a new city you wouldn’t normally travel too. Either way you will be giving yourself a chance to stretch those legs, freshen up and relax a little.
Rule number 1 – Always remember to wear comfortable clothing! This applies to any sort of travel, if you’re on business bring your business attire with you, but wear some comfortable clothing and just get changed before you land! There is nothing worse than stepping off a plane after travelling for so long and feeling tired and exhausted because you couldn’t get comfortable. If you’re a traveller going from one climate to the next, same rules wear comfy clothing and just bring a spare change of clothes suitable for the climate you will be landing in! (So many times have I gone from cold to warm or warm to cold climates and truly regretted not dressing in the right clothing!)
Rule number 2 – Don’t wear make up/hair gel/hair spray/ etc. chances are your going to walk off the plane with baggy eyes, dry skin and greasy hair. This cant be helped and generally happens because of the dry air inside the plane and you will feel so much nicer if you just wait until the plane starts the decent to go and get ready, save those selfies for when you land!
Rule number 3 – Bring water, and healthy snacks! Make sure you also think about bringing ear plugs, eye mask, good headphones and warm socks! Why all of these things you wonder? Well if you struggle to sleep whilst in transit up in the air like me, then a few of these simple items can save your dreams! Literally! My best decision was to buy a good eye mask purchase from Katmandu, and an expensive – but totally worth it pair of headphones that cancel out surrounding noise! BEST DECISION EVER!
Now like these obvious rules, there is one more id like to add, when your sitting in that not so comfy seat, dying to just stretch out your legs and wanting to go to the bathroom s the person next to you sleep peacefully, your thoughts are going crazy and you are beginning to wish you have never booked this flight, just remember this. Nine out of ten people have never been overseas before, eight out of ten people have never been on a plane, and over 87% have never had the opportunity to be sitting where you are right now! You’re about to embark on a trip that could change your life, the way you live and the things you do and see. You could be escaping for a short break, going on a business trip or travelling the world. Whatever it is, wherever it is your going, just remember to stop and think to yourself. WOW, look at where I am. Look at where I am going. Appreciate the good times ahead! And make the most of your time flying in the sky above the world! Some can only ever dream of being in your position.
